Jim Franken

February 25, 1917 — November 2, 2008

Jim Franken, 91, of Sioux Center died Sunday, November 2, 2008 at the Pleasant Acres Care Center of Hull, Iowa.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10:30AM at Carmel Reformed Church of rural Rock Valley with Rev. Mark Heijerman officiating. Interment will follow in Carmel Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4-8PM with the family present from 6-8PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

The Franken Family prefers memorials to the Carmel Reformed Church New Horizon Fund.






James Franken

was born to Art L. and Alice (Lammers) Franken on February 25, 1917 on a farm near Sioux Center. He attended country school through 8th grade.

He married Nellie Broek on May 26, 1939 at her parents home. Jim and Nell lived on various farms and acreages in the Sioux Center area. They then moved to Sioux Center where they resided for 26 years. Jim was employed at Franken Garage of Carmel, later farmed and then worked for 35 years at Quality Home Sales.

Jim was a member of the Carmel Reformed Church his entire married life. He was a Sunday school and catechism teacher. He served on the consistory as both a deacon and elder. He also worked many years as a member of the Carmel Reformed Church Building committee. He enjoyed fishing and wintering at Conquistador Trailer Court in Mesa, Arizona for 24 years.

Jim greeted everyone with a smile and a handshake. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He loved to tell stories and always offered a helping hand. Jim was a wonderful host. He lived and led a Christian life, showing love, acceptance and joy to everyone he met.

Jim is survived by two sons and their wives: Art and Jo Franken of Sheldon and John and Phyllis Franken of Sioux Center; a son-in-law, Gerrit Davelaar and wife, Helma of Inwood; 10 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 6 step grandchildren; 13 step great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Bertha Franken and a brother-in-law, Louis Wynia both of Sioux Center and a special friend, Cora Broek of Sioux Center.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Nell; daughter, Eleanor Davelaar; daughter-in-law, Eldean Franken; a grandson, Brian Jon Franken; his parents; two brothers: Dick and Alfred Franken and two sisters: Hermina Wynia and Elizabeth Van Maanen.
