Joan Kooiker, 89, of Middleburg, IA died Saturday, October 11, 2008 at her residence.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at 10:30am at the Middleburg Free Grace Reformed Church of Middleburg, IA, with the burial following the service at the Capel Township cemetery of Middleburg.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 3-8pm with the family present from 5-8pm at the Middleburg Free Grace Reformed Church.
The Kooiker family prefers memorials to the Luke Society or Sioux Center Christian School.
Joan Kooiker passed away in her home on October 11, 2008 after being diagnosed with cancer in September, 2008. She was born May 3, 1919, in Sioux Center to Richard and Dena (Van Putten) Dykstra and spent her childhood on a farm south of Rock Valley. Following High School she taught at a country school northwest of Rock Valley for 6 years. She then spent 1 year in California working as a riveter in an airplane factory near the close of WWII.
Shortly after returning to Iowa she met William H. Kooiker. The couple was married December 5, 1945. They raised their family of ten on a dairy farm near Middleburg, Iowa. After her husband "Billy's" death in 1968 she continued to operate the farm with the help of her children.
Joan had a strong and steady faith and believed God had a plan for her life which enabled her to accept trials and difficulties and to rejoice and give thanks for the many blessings God gave her. She touched the lives of each of her children and grandchildren with her faith, humor, intelligence, and love for life. Joan loved reading, traveling, playing cards, painting ceramics, and spending time enjoying nature.
She was a member of Middleburg Free Grace Reformed Church. Her participation in her own personal and group Bible studies provided much spiritual growth and encouragement in her life.
She is survived by her children: Harlyn and Frieda Kooiker of Magnolia MN, Beth Kooiker of Sioux Center, Bill & Brenda Kooiker, Paul & Sue Kooiker, Paula & Daryl Meendering, Rich and Minerva Kooiker, all of Middleburg, IA, Dave & Ruth Kooiker of Lake Wilson, MN, DeeAnn & Bob Cleveringa of Orange City, Barb & Wrede Vogel of Luverne, MN, and Ruth & Dan Bentaas of Sioux Falls, SD; 44 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Albert & Harriet Kooiker of Hull; sister-in-law, Clara Vande Weerd of Bruce, SD and many nieces & nephews.
She was proceeded in death by her husband William H Kooiker; a son, Daniel Kooiker; daughter-in-law Peggy Kooiker; grandchildren, Jimmy & Scotty Kooiker, Michael Cleveringa; great-grandchild, Ava Scholten; sister & husband, Jess & Clarence Mulder; sister, Edna; brothers & wives, John & Marty Dykstra & Bill and Eva Dykstra; 3 brothers in infancy; 2 sisters in infancy; sister-in-law & husband, Johanna & Leroy Wallinga, brother-in-law Nick Vande Weerd.
