Thelma R. Broek

Thelma R. Broek, 83, of Sioux Center, IA died Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.


A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11am at Bethel Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Duane Tinklenberg officiating. Interment will be held prior to the memorial service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

A prayer service will be held Saturday at 10AM at the Bethel Christian Reformed Church.

Visitation will be held Friday from 2-8pm, with the family present from 6:30-8pm at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

The Broek Family prefers memorials be directed to Bethel Christian Reformed Church or the Sioux Center Community Hospital Foundation.




Thelma Rose Broek was born July 20, 1925 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Casey and Sarah (Douma) Heyman. Her family moved to Hull, Iowa when she was a young child. She received her education in Hull and graduated from the Hull Community High School.

On May 20, 1945, Thelma married David Broek at Little Rock, Arkansas. The couple also lived in New Jersey for a while before settling in the Sioux Center, Iowa area. As a young woman, Thelma worked in various positions outside the home, primarily as a telephone operator. At home, she was a caregiver, devoted wife and mother.

Thelma was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. She was active in church Circles and the After Five Christian Womens Group. Thelma also enjoyed taking time to volunteer at the Sioux Center Christian School.

Thelma liked to visit with friends over a cup of coffee or while playing a game of cards. She spent countless hours reading newspapers and keeping up with the activities of her family.

Thelma is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law: Calvin and Mary Broek of Hudsonville, MI, Darrel and Deb Broek of Lighthouse Point, FL, and Loren and Sheri Broek of Sioux Center; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Marie Heyman of Alton, IA; brothers-in-law: Joe Van Roekel and John B. Broek; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Delbert and Annafeen Broek and sister-in-law, Priscilla Broek all of Sioux Center as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Those who have preceded Thelma in death are her husband, David Broek; her parents; brother, Howard Heyman; sisters-in-law, Margaret Van Roekel, Delma Broek, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lillian and Warren Van Roekel and brother-in-law, Barney Broek.
