Hester Hollaar

August 17, 1917 — March 19, 2008

Hester Hollaar, age 90, of Sioux Center, IA died unexpectedly Wednesday March 19, 2008 at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.



A remembrance service will be held Friday at 5:30pm at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center, IA with Rev. Mark Verbruggen and Mr. Rod De Kruyf officiating.



Visitation will be held Friday from 4pm to 5:30pm at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.



A funeral service will be held Saturday at 2pm the Hull Christian Reformed Church of Hull, North Dakota with Dr. LeRoy Hollaar officiating. A time of fellowship will follow the interment in the Hull Cemetery of Hull, North Dakota.

Hester M. Hollaar was born August 7, 1917 on a farm near Hull, ND the youngest daughter of thirteen children born to Aren and Jennie (Groen) Hollaar. Hester attended the Hull Elementary School and graduated from Hague High School in Hague, ND in 1935. She graduated from North Dakota State College in Ellendale, ND with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1959. In 1964 she received a Masters of Arts degree in Librarianship from the University of Denver.



Hester's teaching career began in a one-room school house in North Dakota where she taught from 1942 to 1955. In 1959, she served as teacher-librarian at Western Christian High School in Hull, IA. She became the Director of Dordt College Library in Sioux Center, IA in 1964; a position she held until her retirement in 1983.



Throughout her life Hester was a member of Christian Reformed Churches in Hull, ND and Hull, IA. She was currently a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center.



During retirement she was active in many areas of volunteer work in her church and community. Through her work with Crossroads Bible Institute Prison Ministry she mentored prisoners throughout the country by correcting Bible lessons and writing them words of encouragement.



In 2004, Hester received retroactively the Purple Heart Award in memory of her eldest brother, William Hollaar, who gave his life while serving in France during World War I. Hester received this award on her familys behalf as the only living sibling.



Hester is survived by many nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her parents; and six brothers and six sisters who have gone on to be with the Lord: William, Aren, Peter, Garritt, Jacob, and Marvin Hollaar, Lena Droog, Winnie Haak, Cornelia Hollaar, Mary Hollaar, Cora Int Veldt and Jennie Hollaar.
