Henry Bonnema was born on January 26, 1918 at home on the family farm near Highland Hill, rural Ireton. He was the youngest of 11 children born to Dirk and Tietje (Westra) Bonnema. At age 19 he took over the farm with his mother when his father passed away.
On January 7, 1942 he married the love of his life, Elizabeth Bets Dekkers at her home. They farmed near Ireton until they moved to Sioux Center in 1980. During their years on the farm they were blessed with 10 children. They were members of the Lebanon Christian Reformed Church where Henry served as an Elder and also on the Lebanon Christian School Board. After moving to Sioux Center they joined the First Christian Reformed Church where he also served as an Elder.
In his spare time he enjoyed planting flowers and gardening. He stayed active working for the City of Sioux Center: caring for Central Park and the Centre Mall. He found much satisfaction in keeping things clean and freshly painted. He mostly loved meeting new people and playing Dutch Bingo. Henry loved music and singing. He sang invarious men'squartets as well as with his beloved Bets.
Henry loved visiting with family and friends. He was known for his sense of humor and quick wit and always had a joke or story to share. These characteristics were a true blessing during his years in the nursing home, where he also spent much time as a prayer warrior.
