BUD VANDER BROEK, 74, of Sioux Center, Iowa died unexpectedly at his home Saturday, 5/14.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, 5/18, at 3pm in the sanctuary of First Reformed Church of Sioux Center, with Rev. Roger Voskuil officiating. Interment will be held prior to the memorial service in Sherman Township Cemetery of rural Maurice, Iowa; his casket will be transported by a horse-drawn hearse.

A Prayer Service will be held Wednesday at 1pm at the Maurice First Reformed Church.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, 5/17, in the Fellowship Hall of First Reformed Church of Sioux Center from 2pm to 8pm, with the family present from 5pm to 8pm.

John Franklin Bud Vander Broek was born on March 29, 1931 to Anthony and Martha Vander Broek near Maurice, Iowa. During his formative years Buds family lived near Carnes, Iowa. Bud was stationed in Germany for 18 months during the Korean War and faithfully served his country.

On March 5, 1957, Bud was joined in marriage to Henrietta Wilmina Vander Schaaf at Middleburg Reformed Church. The young couple lived in various area communities before they made their home west of Sioux Center.

Bud worked for various area farmers until 1973. He then spent the next 25 years working for Farmers Coop Society in Sioux Center until 1995. After retiring, he worked part-time for Bar-K-Farms.

After his family, Buds love was his horses. Over the years he was active in the Sioux Center and Hull Saddle Clubs. He planned and organized 13 trips to the Black Hills for the Sioux Center Saddle Club. He was also a member of the Heritage Board. Over the years he attended many trail rides at Newton Hills State Park, Stone State Park, Lake Benton and many other rides in the area. He also enjoyed riding and driving his horses in parades. Bud helped 40 brides and grooms celebrate the beginning of their married lives together with a horse and carriage ride. In the last 16 years Bud has taken part in 82 wagon trains. For the past eight years, Bud has assisted with fundraising efforts and supported New Life treatment Center in Woodstock, Minnesota. A hobby of his has been building lawn ornaments out of old horse equipment.

Left to celebrate his life are his wife, Henrietta; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Denise Vander Broek of Sioux Center, Dan and Lori Vander Broek of Fairview, SD; and two daughters, Dawn Scott of Valley, NE and Elaine Vander Broek of Orange City; his six grandchildren: Jennifer, Tanner, Courtney, Joseph, Jami, and Kaitlyn Vander Broek. Also surviving is his sister, Marge Lubbers of Bigfork, MN.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Don Vander Broek.
