Hilda Lubbers was born March 26, 1905, in Humboldt, Iowa, the daughter of Cling and Hanna (Wiig) Cleveland. As a young girl, her family moved to South Dakota, and later settled in Tall Moon, Minnesota. Fond memories were riding her horse "Chubby" to school, and working summers at Idle Wild Resort.

When Hilda was a young woman she went to Canton, South Dakota to work as a waitress in the hotel. This is where she met Alfred "Ted" Lubbers, a barber also working at the hotel. Hilda was a stay at home mom, until the children were grown. She then began working at Roelofs & Vander Berg Store for next 30 years. In 1992, she started crocheting lace around baby blankets sold in the store. Hilda loved to keep her hands busy and at last count she had lovingly crocheted over 1,200. Hilda was an active member of Central Reformed Church since moving to Sioux Center.
