Alvina Punt was born July 8, 1931, the daughter of Gerrit and Hattie (Gerritsen) Vande Kamp on the family farm west of Sioux Center. She attended country school through the 8th grade.
On November 23, 1951, Alvina married Donald Punt. Together they farmed the Punt Homestead from 1951-1984, after which time they moved to Sioux Center. In 2014, Donald and Alvina made their residence at Crown Pointe and in 2017, Alvina moved to Royale Meadows Care Center. With each move, came new friendships. Donald and Alvina were charter members of New Life Reformed Church, where Alvina attended women’s Bible study and Morning Glory Circle.
Alvina was a woman of many talents who lived a busy and full life serving others. She believed the way to a person’s heart was through their stomach. People in the community who might not have known her name, knew her as “the potato salad lady”. Alvina was also famous for her delicious pies and fresh fruit salad.
Another way that Alvina served family and friends was as an excellent seamstress - if you showed her something, she could make it; and if it was torn or needed a patch, she could fix it.
Her family loved receiving her baby blankets and baby sleepers - and the Christmas stockings she made continued to bring joy to her great-grandchildren. Items she lovingly made are now left behind for every addition to the family to treasure.
To Alvina, her family was everything. She loved attending her grandchildren and great- grandchildren’s events and visiting on the phone with those that lived farther away. She was a huge Sioux Center Warriors fan. She attended many games when her grandchildren were in school and later could be found listening to the games on the radio. Alvina always looked forward to family gatherings - to see everyone, share great food, and play a game of Rook. Pictures of family and the special drawings from her great-grandchildren decorated her room.
Alvina will be remembered for the faith and courage she showed when faced with adversity. She knew her only comfort in life and death was in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was a prayer warrior both for her family and others. Alvina will be missed, but there is also great confidence and joy in her eternal life with Jesus.
Left to cherish Alvina’s memory are her six children and their spouses: Glenda and Peter Nieuwkoop of Sioux City, Dave and Elinor Punt of Sioux Center, Darryl and Linda Punt of Noblesville, IN, Loren and Barb Punt of Sioux Center, Alicia and Tom Beaver of Sioux Center and Leon and Teresa Punt of Marana, AZ; 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Other survivors: Henrietta Sneller of Sioux Center, IA; Gracia and Lloyd Punt of Pipestone, MN; Gert and Don Vos of Ripon, CA; Helen Mulder of Munster, IN; sister-in-law Delores and Leonard Leenderts of Hills, MN. Punt family: Lawrence and Shirley Groen, Arlene Bidwell, Leroy Punt, and Dorothy and Curtis Van Briesen. Numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Punt, and a granddaughter, Karli Jo Punt. Parents, Gerrit and Hattie Vande Kamp; brothers, Gerrit Vande Kamp and Gerald Vande Kamp; sisters, Wilhelmina and Asa Kraayenbrink, Margaret Sybesma and her husbands John Meendering and Syne Sybesma. Brothers-in-law, Harold Sneller and Edwin Mulder. Punt family: Henry and Wilhelmina Punt, Audrey Groen, Ralph Punt, Forrest Bidwell, Henry Punt and Joan Punt.
