Bernice Sandbulte, age 94 of Sioux Center, Iowa died Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center, IA.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30AM on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at the Carmel Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Steve Van Wyhe officiating. Interment will follow the service in Carmel Cemetery of Sioux Center, Iowa.
A visitation with family present will be held from 5-7PM on Friday, February 5, 2021 at the Carmel Reformed Church.
Masks and social distancing will be followed.
Bernice was born, June 28, 1926, to John G. and Johanna (Rozeboom) Schuiteman on the family farm near Sioux Center. She attended country school before receiving her Normal Training Certificate. She taught at the country school five years before marriage.
Bernice was joined in marriage to Howard Sandbulte on September 15, 1950, at the First Reformed Church in Sioux Center. The couple lived for a few years in Oklahoma, while Howard was serving in the military. In 1957, the couple moved to the Schuiteman family farm. Bernice faithfully helped on the family farm as well as answering phones for the family trucking business.
Bernice was a devoted member of the Carmel Reformed Church, where she served as a Sunday school and Catechism teacher as well as serving as the Sunday School director for many years. She participated in the church choir, bible studies and women’s circle. She was also instrumental in organizing the Carmel Reformed Church Vacation Bible school.
In her free time, Bernice enjoyed cooking and gardening. She loved visiting with company and used her gift of hospitality to invite others over to visit or share a meal. Bernice moved into Royale Meadows Care Center on June 12, 2019 to be close to Howard.
She is survived by her husband, Howard Sandbulte of Sioux Center, her children: Daniel and Joanne Sandbulte of Allendale, MI, Eugene Sandbulte of Sioux Center, Iowa, Alvin Sandbulte and Calvin Sandbulte both of Rock Valley, IA, Jolene and Loren Hooyer of Sioux Center and James and Carla Sandbulte of Lincoln, NE; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; siblings: Arlene Schuiteman of Sioux Center; Grada Kiel of Sioux Center; Joyce VerMeer of Savage, MN, Millie and Lee Ten Brink of Holland, MI, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; sister and brother-in-law, Harriet and Henry Boterhoek; brothers-in-law, Howard Kiel and Wilmer VerMeer.
