Eugene Beernink, 89 of Sioux Center, Iowa died Friday, November 27, 2020 at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center, IA.
A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at the First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, IA, with Reverend Stephen Breen officiating.
Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center.
Visitation will be Tuesday, December 1st from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center. Family will not be present.
Social distancing guidelines will be followed at the funeral home and the church, and masks are strongly encouraged.
Eugene Jerome Beernink was born September 3, 1931 in Maurice, IA the son of Harold and Henrietta (Vermeer) Beernink. He was raised on a farm SW of Sioux Center and graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1948. On February 4, 1953 he was united in marriage to Hermina Vander Maten at the Middleburg Reformed Church. Together they started out living in Ft. Crowder, MO for 18 months, while Eugene served in the U.S. Army. After he received his discharge, they moved to a farm northwest of Maurice, IA where they lived for the next 19 years. In 1974 they moved to a home in Sioux Center. Gene was a lifelong member of First Reformed Church in Sioux Center. He served as deacon and elder for several terms and taught Sunday school and catechism classes. He enjoyed watching baseball, especially the New York Yankees and going for ‘a ride’ in the country looking at the crops.
He is survived by his son, Greg (Connie) Beernink of Orange City, IA; daughter-in-law, Kathy Beernink of Estherville, IA; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren; brothers, Darrell (Alyce) Beernink of Bloomington, IL and Howard (Marge) Beernink of Sioux Center, IA; sisters-in-law, Cia Vander Ploeg of Sheldon, IA and Kaye (Herb) Kuyper of Sioux Center, IA; brother-in-law, Herman (Marilyn) Vander Maten of Surprise, AZ.
Preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Henrietta Beernink; wife, Hermina Beernink; son, Randy Beernink; sister, Marlene Beernink; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Allie (Myron) Korver, Jenieva (Peter) Kastein, John Vander Maten, Hans (Millie) Vander Maten, Gert (Bill) Huisman, Bill (Ann) Vander Maten, Harriet (Wilbur) Harmelink; and step-grandson, Greg Nieman.
