Frederick George Haan was born on July 10, 1954, in Grand Rapids, MI, the son of Reverend Norman and Joyce (Meyners) Haan.
On March 21, 1975, Fred was united in marriage to Cheryl Lynn De Vries at the Phoenix Christian Reformed Church in Phoenix, AZ. The couple lived in Phoenix for a time where Fred owned and operated Haan Printing. In 1978, they moved to Sioux Center, IA, where he started working for Dordt College (now known as Dordt University). They raised three children, Eric, Paula, and David.
Memberships throughout Fred’s life included Phoenix CRC in Phoenix, AZ, and Bethel CRC, Faith CRC, and currently First CRC all in Sioux Center, IA. Fred loved serving as a deacon and had a real heart for those in need. He was a deacon at Phoenix CRC, Faith CRC, and First CRC. He served on the Outreach Committee as well as the Foundation Board. He was also very involved in the Siouxland Diaconal Conference and was a Cadet counselor for several years.
He loved golfing, fishing, watching football games, movies, and NASCAR races, playing Rook, listening to a wide variety of music, watching the History Channel, and reading about current events and politics. Due to his illness, Pompe’s Disease, he had to give up many of his hobbies. But since he retired in 2019, he also learned to love doing puzzles and reading books about historical figures and politics.
Fred is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Cheryl Haan of Sioux Center, IA; three children, Eric (Amy) Haan of Luverne, MN and their children Brooklyn, Blake, and Olivia; Paula (Craig) Hilbelink of Orange City, IA, and David (Paige) Haan of Sioux Falls, SD and their children Tyler, Jenna, Jessa, and Luke; five siblings, Norma Voss of Mesa, AZ, Rich (Marsha) Haan of Grand Rapids, MI, Tom (Marilyn) Haan of Longview, WA, Brenda (Kevin) Greenfield of Waupun, WI, and Kevin (Angela) Haan of Waupun, WI; nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his first-born son, Peter John Haan; and his parents, Norm and Joyce Haan.
