Gerrit Horstman

     Gerrit Horstman, age 94 of Sioux Center, IA died on Monday, August 1, 2022, at Crown Pointe Estates in Sioux Center, Iowa.

     A memorial service will take place 1:30 PM, Friday, August 5, 2022, at New Life Reformed Church in Sioux Center with Reverend Dan Kruse officiating.  Gerrit's service can be viewed Here: Gerrit Horstman Service

     A prayer service will take place prior to the memorial service at 12:30 PM at New Life Reformed Church with burial to follow the prayer service at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center.

     Visitation will take place Thursday, August 4th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.

     Memorial donations may be directed to New Life Reformed Church of Sioux Center.

     Gerrit J. Horstman was born on March 22, 1928, to Joe and Reka (Hulstein) Horstman in Sioux Center.  He was raised on a farm west of Sioux Center with his two siblings and attended Plato Township country school. 

     On May 28, 1948, Gerrit was united in marriage to Ruth Westra at Ruth’s parents’ home in Hull, Iowa.  They lived on the farm north of Sioux Center and were blessed with six children.  They moved to Sioux Center in November of 1992.  Ruth passed away on July 3, 2018. 

     Gerrit thoroughly enjoyed farming.  He worked at Coop Confinement, working and vaccinating cattle, and running the skid loader.  He was a mentor for many who worked alongside him.  He retired at the age of 88 and helped his son with harvest for a couple of years. 

     He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Hull where he was a deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher, and catechism teacher.  He later became a member at New Life Reformed Church in Sioux Center.  He was also a member of the Coop Board. 

     His family will remember him as soft spoken, caring, loved his family, a Godly man, hard worker.

     Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Peter (Caron) Horstman of Doon, IA, Russell Horstman of Tea, SD, Jolene (Ken) Vander Ziel of Rock Valley, IA, Linda (Dave) Van Eck of Lincoln, NE and Lorna (Bruce) Midthun of Sioux Center, IA; 18 grandchildren; 50 great grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Koele of Sheldon, IA; along with nieces, nephews, and extended family.

     He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; parents, Joe and Reka; brother, William Horstman; son, Calvin Horstman; 2 grandsons, Brock Midthun and Michael Horstman; 1 brother-in-law, and 1 sister-in-law.
