Christmas is a time that holds promise, hope, and celebration as we remember always the birth of Jesus into this world. Christmas day in 1941 was extra special for Ed J. and Priscilla (Schuiteman) Vermeer as they were overjoyed to welcome their first born, a son, Glen J. Vermeer, born in the Sioux Center Hospital. Four years later Glen's sister Lois (Vermeer) Broughton was born. Lois later married Lee Broughton and they have lived in Seattle, Washington for more than 50 years, along with their children and grandchildren. Glen and Lois made Ed and Pricilla's family of four complete.
Glen was a farmer at heart. He grew up on a farm west of Sioux Center, Iowa and always enjoyed learning from and helping his dad. He attended Sioux Center Christian School through eighth grade and joked that he had been able to skip kindergarten. After graduating from Sioux Center Community High School, Glen drove trucks for various trucking firms out of Sioux Center before returning to full time farming in 1962. In 1964, Glen married Betty Ann Hollaar, who was a student at Dordt College in Sioux Center. Betty grew up in Hull, North Dakota. Glen and Betty have three children. Paul Vermeer, who lives in Rockford, Illinois with children: Justin Nelson, Spencer Vermeer and Isabelle Vermeer. Lora (Vermeer) Rankin, who lives in Hull, Iowa, and is married to Eric Rankin, with children: Elizabeth (Rankin) Dahl married to Eli Dahl, William Rankin, and Kohen Rankin. Mark Vermeer, who lives in Sioux Center, Iowa, is married to Tricia (Berkenpas) Vermeer, with four daughters: Aftyn Vermeer, Samantha Vermeer, Emalee Vermeer, and Lydia Vermeer.
Glen loved his family well and was a caring husband and father. He was a man that looked at life through a positive lens, influencing his family to strive to do the same. Glen had a confidence in God that shaped his perspective to trust that any situation or circumstance would be safe in the hands of his Lord and Savior. One such life circumstance occurred on a snowy morning on December 7, 1982. Glen was taking the lid off of the top of a 36-foot-high grain bin when he slipped and fell to the ground. His fall resulted in a compound fracture of the femur and several years in-and-out of hospital care. Through God's grace in adversity, Glen continued to provide for, lead, and take care of his family, all while continuing to farm with the care of the crops and the livestock.
In 2018 Glen was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, and in 2020 he battled through cancer and cancer treatments. Glen never lost his "glass half full" attitude, and with the help of his wife of almost 60 years was able to remain at home until the last six weeks of his life.
Friends will miss Glen's fun personality and bright smile. His family will always give thanks to God for giving them a committed husband, father and papa who loved them so deeply and who lived to glorify his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
