Harold B. Vermeer

         Harold B. Vermeer, age 95, of Sioux Center, Iowa died Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at Crown Pointe Care Center. in Sioux Center.

         A prayer service will be held at 9:00AM on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center.

         A memorial service will be held at 10:30AM on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at the New Life Reformed Church with Rev. Bobby Van Otterloo and Rev. Dan Kruse officiating.  

         A visitation with family present will be held from 5-7PM on Monday, May 23, 2022, at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.  

     Harold B. Vermeer was born on December 10, 1926 at Sioux Center, IA to parents Joe and Agnes (Vander Aarde) Vermeer.  He grew up in Hull, IA.  In 1944 Harold entered the U.S. Navy where he served in World War II until 1946.  Harold attended Northwestern College in Orange City when it was still a two year college.  He was united in marriage to Mildred Gort on June 28, 1949.  The couple then resided in Sioux Center where Harold began his 32-year career working for the post office, initially being one of two town mail carriers for Sioux Center and walking 7 or more miles a day.  He retired from the post office at age 55 and was then fortunate to be retired more years than he worked. Harold enjoyed singing in church choirs and the Legion Quartet.  He was a faithful member of New Life Reformed Church in Sioux Center.  For twelve years Harold and Milly spent winters in Arizona doing volunteer work for Cook Theological Seminary.  In 2001 they bought a trailer in Mesa, AZ and for 21 years spent five months of the year there. Mr. Vermeer enjoyed playing cards, telling jokes and watching sports on television. He rarely missed going to sports events of his children, then his grandchildren and most recently his great grandchildren. Harold was an active veteran serving 75 years with the American Legion and was the last surviving World War II veteran in Sioux Center. He had been living at Ridge Estates in Sioux Center for 13 years, then moved to Hillcrest Nursing Home in Hawarden for 3 months, then to Crown Pointe Estates for 36 hours before going home to be with Jesus.
     He is survived by three sons Brad (Glenda) Vermeer, Lyle (Joyce) Vermeer both of Sioux Center, IA and Lance (Carol Yacko) Vermeer of Hawarden, IA; a sister Ruth Van Zee of Artesia, CA ; seven grandchildren; and seventeen great grandchildren.
     Harold was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mildred, brother Lloyd Vermeer and his sisters Angie Cox and Tracy Rhodes. 

     The Family prefers memorials be directed to the Doornink-Brunsting American Legion Post # 199 of Sioux Center.  Blessed be the Memory of Harold B. Vermeer.
