Henry John Dokter was born on November 2, 1927 in Hull, Iowa, to Evert and Bertha (Wissink) Dokter.  He grew up in Hull, Iowa, and attended Sioux Center High School.  On February 21, 1951, Henry was drafted into the United States Army.

On June 5, 1951, Henry was united in marriage to Irene Dykstra at First Reformed Church in Rock Valley, Iowa.  Henry and Irene moved to several places during his enlistment, including Virginia and Wisconsin.  They made their home in Sioux Center after Henry served two years in the Army.  Together they raised five sons and one daughter.
