Herlan Edgar Schut was born on December 20, 1932, in Sioux Center, Iowa, the son of Ed and Mina (Schuiteman) Schut. He was raised on a farm east of Sioux Center with his brother, Ellsworth and sisters, Marcia and Pauline. He attended country school and graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1950. He then worked two years for his dad and local farmers. He attended Northwestern Junior College in Orange City, Iowa for two meaningful and rewarding years. He enjoyed fast pitch softball and bowling.

Herlan married Betty De Boom on June 3, 1954. They were the happy parents of two sons, Eric Peter and Wade Harlan.

Herlan spent two years in the United States Army, one of which he spent in Korea.

After returning from Korea, he started farming. He had a passion for cattle feeding which extended over 60 years. His involvement in the cattle industry included local, district, and state organizations. His grandfather Peter S. Schut was one of many role models. His dad Ed P. Schut was a mentor to him. They worked together for over 20 years in perfect harmony.

He was involved with the local cooperative association, First Reformed Church, West Sioux Classis, Northwestern College Executive board, American Legion, and Producers Association.

Herlan’s faith in God was the most important thing in his life. He loved and served the Lord very well. He loved and was very grateful for his wife, two sons, and their families.

He enjoyed taking trips with family and his trips with Betty to Israel, Egypt, Jordan, China, and many states.

Herlan is survived by his loving wife of over 70 years, Betty; sons, Eric (Donna) Schut and Wade (Karen) Schut; five grandchildren, Kelsey (Kley) De Jong of Orange City, Keaton (Rose) Schut of West Des Moines, Karlie (Zack) Schornack of Roseville, MN, Alyssa (Arthur) Valentine of De Pere, WI, Kayla Schut of West Des Moines; nine great grandchildren, Norah, Lucy, Ellory, Aaron, Jorie, Murphy, Averie, Margo, and Brooks; who all give hope to the future, and extend the family to four generations.
