Joan Carol Horstman was born December 6, 1935, to Cornie and Henrietta (Elenbaas) Hoekstra in Orange City, Iowa. She grew up on a farm southwest of Orange City and later on a farm east of Middleburg, where she attended a one room country school thru grade five, then Orange City Christian School, and graduated from Western Christian High School in Hull, IA.

She was united in marriage to James Horstman on May 31, 1956, at First Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center. Joan and Jim spent two years in California while Jim was in the United States Navy. They moved back to Sioux Center where they made their home and were blessed with four children. Joan was an integral part of the family business “Horstman Interiors” selling and installing custom window coverings, draperies, and blinds, maintained the business financial records, and supported Jim in the floor covering part of the business. Joan also volunteered and maintained the financial records for the community cemetery where Jim was a board member.

Joan was a member of First Christian Reformed Church where she volunteered and was a member of several groups including Gleaners Forum and the Pigs in the Blanket project. She enjoyed traveling, spending her winter months during retirement in Mesa, Arizona, and researching family genealogy. Sewing and crafts came naturally to Joan, she loved crocheting and needlepoint which later included a hemstitching business for baby blankets.  Most recently she enjoyed a good game of Heartland Strategy and coffee time with her dearest friends.
