Lawrence A. Meendering

Lawrence Meendering, age 80, of Sioux Center, IA died Monday, July 13, 2020 at Sioux Center Health in Sioux Center.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, July 17, 2020 at the First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Dr. Timothy Meendering and Rev. Carl Klompien officiating.  Interment will follow the service in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center.   

A visitation with the family present will be held Thursday, July 16, 2020, from 5-7 PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. Proper social distancing protocol will be followed.

In lieu of flowers the Meendering family prefer memorials be directed to: Crossroads Prison Ministries, 2480 44th Street SE, Kentwood, MI 49512

Lawrence Alfred Meendering, the son of Bert and Ann (Mooibroek) Meendering was born July 27, 1939 on a farm near Sioux Center, Iowa.  He attended the Carmel country school for three years and was taught by his cousins, Emma and Esther Hooyer.  In 1948, he moved with his family to a farm three miles west of Sheldon, Iowa, where he and his eight siblings attended Lynn Township country school. After father Bert’s rheumatism in his back resulted in surgery, Lawrence gave up his high school education to farm full time.

On February 6, 1959, Lawrence married Marjorie Ellen Hiemstra in Sheldon, Iowa.   The couple moved to an acreage after a short employment as a tenant farmer near Hospers, Iowa.  He worked for his father until 1966, when his parents retired to Sioux Center.  Lawrence and Marjorie moved to the home place near Sheldon where he raised crops and fed cattle.   In 2016, they retired to Sioux Center.

Lawrence is survived by his wife, Marjorie Meendering of Sioux Center; three children: Rev. Dr. Tim and Ruth Meendering of Grand Rapids, MI, Lisa and Kenneth Van Kekerix of Sheldon, IA, Todd and Lori Meendering of Boyden, IA; 9 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; sisters, Cornelia Jansen of Colorado Springs, CO and Lois and Jim Dirksen of Rock Valley, IA; three brothers: Gary and Theresa Meendering of Tuscaloosa, AL, Allan Meendering of Sioux Falls, SD, Calvin Meendering of Racine, WI.  He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: John and Margaret Meendering, James and Diana Meendering and Marvin Meendering; brother-in-law, Harold Jansen and two sisters-in-law, Corleen Meendering and Nancy Meendering.
