Army from May 1962 to April 1964, where he started and completed his high school education. This time was followed by eight years of service in the Army Reserve.  After his discharge, he returned to the family farm south of Hull, Iowa, where he worked at the gas station near Perkins Corner.

While in Hull this town “rebel” met the 2nd grade teacher at Hull Christian grade school. She was from Hancock, MN.  This teacher stole his heart and on December 29, 1964, he was joined in marriage to Patricia Eleanor Ver Steeg at the Hancock Christian Reformed Church. Brother Vernon officiated.

In his later years, his pastime was feeding the squirrels and watching the people that passed by their house on 4th Ave. His most important role in these final years was being with Pat, taking care of his bride of 57 years.
