Ruth De Koter age 89, of Altoona, IA formerly of Sioux Center, IA died Monday, July 15, 2019 at the Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, IA.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, July 20th at the First Reformed Church in Maurice, IA, with Reverend Ross Hoekstra, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Sherman Township Cemetery rural Maurice, IA.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service with family present at First Reformed Church in Maurice, IA.
Ruth Naomi De Koter was born in Bigelow, Minnesota on November 8, 1929 to Marion and Jeanette (Vellinga) Mouw. Ruth was raised in Orange City, Iowa. On November 25, 1947 she was united in marriage to Arthur De Koter. Art and Ruth made their home in Maurice, Iowa until moving to Sioux Center in 1971.
Ruth began working for the US Postal Service in 1955 and retired in 1985 as the Postmaster in Maurice, Iowa. Art and Ruth enjoyed camping at Okoboji and after retirement spent many winters in their fifth wheel in Texas. They enjoyed playing cards, fishing, and took many memorable vacations with family members. In later years, Ruth made many beautiful cross stitch projects. She also loved a competitive game of Scrabble! But most important to Ruth was her faith in God and love of her family. She was a lifelong member of the First Reformed Church in Maurice.
Ruth moved to the Des Moines area in 2012 to be closer to her son. She resided at Prairie Vista Village in Altoona where she made many new friends and was loved by the staff.
She will be missed by her son Dean and his wife, Connie of Bondurant, IA; grandchildren, Rick De Koter and his wife, Denise of Eden Prairie, MN, Trent De Koter and his wife, Tracy of Tiffin, IA, and Kara De Koter of Des Moines, IA. She is also survived by her beloved great grandchildren; Chase and Ryan De Koter of Eden Prairie, Jordan, Logan, and Caden De Koter of Tiffin and Jaeda De Koter of Des Moines; a brother, Ken Mouw and his wife, Nancy of California; sister-in-law, Beverly Mouw of Orange City, IA; and many nieces and nephews and many other family members.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Rebecca; great grandson, Ethan De Koter; brother Al “Sonny” Mouw; sister Mary Hilton; and brother in infancy.
