Terry Dean Hooyer was born on May 6, 1955, in Sioux Center, IA, the son of Albert and Florence (Van Donge) Hooyer.  He grew up in Carmel, IA and graduated from Western Christian.

On June 6, 1975, Terry was united in marriage to Marla Kay Vander Stelt in Sioux Center, IA.  The couple lived in Sioux Center for a year then moved to Middleburg, IA. While living there, they were blessed with three children: Brian, Sheryl & Brent. Terry owned and operated Hooyer Construction while also working at Harkers. In 1986, they moved to a farm near Maurice, IA. Terry continued working in construction for some time. He spent his last years working for Sioux Commercial Sweeping.

As a child in rural Carmel, Terry showed cattle and hogs at local fairs as a member of the Plato Pluggers 4-H Club. While in high school, he began serving as a club leader, and he served in a variety of leadership positions for more than 40 years; including serving as a superintendent for sheep, rabbit and poultry at the Sioux County Youth Fair in Sioux Center. 4-H kids in many counties have Terry to thank for their livestock projects. Along with the animals, there was usually advice and encouragement, and always some good-natured kidding. After 40 years of volunteering with 4-H, Terry was inducted into the 2012 4-H Hall of Fame.

Terry enjoyed playing fast-pitch and soft-pitch softball, probably for more years than he should have. When he thought it best to be done playing, he moved to umping. Terry was the happiest when he and Marla were following their grandchildren to their many activities, whether it be in a gym, on a field, or at the fairgrounds.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of almost forty-eight years, Marla Hooyer; three children, Brian and Heidi (Franken) Hooyer, and their children, Kennady, Chayce (Abby Dahl) and Kole; Sheryl and Josh Weber, and their children, Tayler, Emma, and Paige; and Brent and Kelli (Langstraat) Hooyer, and their children, Karter, Brody, and Destiny; six siblings, Bruce and Phyllis Hooyer, Helen and Bill Vanden Top, Anita and Glen Van Bruggen, Allen and Bev Hooyer, Marv Hooyer, and Joel and Irene Hooyer; sister-in-law, Crystal and Wayne Brink; sister-in-law, Gloria and Henry Paulsen; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Florence Hooyer; father and mother-in-law, Cornie and Dorothy Vander Stelt; a niece, Dawn Paulsen; and a nephew, Kent Brink.
