Tom was born in Storm Lake, Iowa, and grew up in Aurelia, Iowa, graduating from Aurelia High School. He later graduated from Northwestern College in Orange City, IA, where he was a talented baseball and basketball player for the Red Raiders. He taught and coached at Montezuma, IA, Little Rock, IA, and Sioux Center. He was well-loved and highly respected by his players and fellow coaches, many of whom have kept in contact with him throughout the years. Tom was an avid golfer and loved spending time on the course with friends and family.
Tom married Doris Dickinson on July 27, 1985, and together they raised three beautiful children. He was extremely proud of his kids and their spouses, and he cherished spending time with them and his little grandson, who shares his birthday. Tom and Doris loved spending time talking, reading books together, going on long walks, and riding their bicycles.
Family meant everything to Tom, and he was a loving, devoted husband and father. He was humble, loyal, and supportive. He also possessed a quick wit, bringing many smiles and laughter to others. Relationships were very important to Tom, even throughout his cancer battle, as he was often more concerned about the lives and welfare of his many caretakers, friends, and family than he was of his own well-being. He loved his Lord with all of his heart, and we rejoice that he is resting in the arms of Jesus, beautifully restored.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, T.J. and Patricia Estes, his infant brother, Stephen, siblings: Ann Short and Bill Estes, and father-in-law, Darrell Dickinson.
He is survived by his wife, Doris, his children, Jennifer and Joe Funk and grandson, Samson Funk, Jordan and Kathryn Estes, and Jillian Estes and significant other, Luke VanGerpen. He is also survived by his siblings: Mike and Deb Estes, Pat and Dan Menke, sister-in-law, Pat Estes, and mother-in-law, Shirley Dickinson.
