Wilbur Vos, age 100, of Sheldon, Iowa formerly of Sioux Center, Iowa died Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at Sanford Sheldon Hospital in Sheldon, Iowa.
A funeral service will be 11:00 AM Monday October 24, 2022, at the Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center with Reverend Jesse Henkle officiating. Interment will follow the service in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center. Live Stream Link: Wilbur Vos Service
Public visitation with family present will be held 1 hour prior to the service at the at the Central Reformed Church.
Wilbur Vos was born December 1, 1921, to Jan and Carrie (Jans) Vos in Sioux Center, Iowa. He attended Sioux Center school through the 8th grade. He began working at age fourteen at Ver Hoef Chevrolet in Sioux Center and had a passion for all things automotive.
On October 3, 1945, Wibur was joined in marriage to Arlone Kroon. The couple happily shared 74 years of marriage before Arlone died in February of 2020.
From 1950 – 1952, Wilbur owned a used car dealership in Sioux Center before becoming a partner in the Cambier Motor Company’s Chevrolet dealership in Primghar, Iowa. He remained there until 1960. Upon returning to Sioux Center, he again worked for Ver Hoef Chevrolet for a few years before starting another used car lot in 1963. In 1965, Wilbur was able to add a new car franchise for Chrysler and Plymouth and became a Dodge dealer in 1972. Vos Motor Sales rounded out new car offerings in 1992 by adding Jeep to the dealership. He received a Chrysler Corporation “Distinguished Dealer” award many times during his career as a Chrysler dealer.
Wilbur “retired” in 1984 and spent many happy years living at the lake in Minnesota. He and Arlone moved back to Sioux Center in 1997. He was a faithful caregiver to Arlone from 2013-2018 due to complications of dementia. In May of 2018, the couple moved to Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon, Iowa.
In his free time, Wilbur enjoyed time at the lake with his family. Car stories were always at the ready as he was a consummate sales person. He was a member of Central Reformed Church.
He is survived by his three sons: Lauren and Shirley Vos of Erhard, MN; Les Vos of Sioux Center; Dell and Lori Vos of Boiling Springs, SC; 5 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Wilbur was preceded in death by his wife, Arlone; parents; siblings: Jennie and Gerrit Klein, Alice and Gerrit Van Riessen, Jake and Johanna Vos and Jeanette Vos. He was also preceded by Arlone’s parents; and her eleven brothers and sisters and their spouses.
