Grace (Nicolay) Droog was born on May 23, 1927, to Johan and Christina (Vanden Burg) Nicolay in Lark, North Dakota. She had four brothers and three sisters. She enjoyed many years of childhood growing up on farms in both the Lark and Hull North Dakota areas.

Early in her teen years, Grace made public profession of her faith in Jesus Christ and began her personal walk with Him. In 1944, Grace graduated from high school in Strasburg, North Dakota. After graduation, she wrote exams to obtain her teaching certificate.  She then taught grades 1-8 in various country schools for four years.

Grace soon found the love of her life, John Gerald Droog and they were joined in marriage on August 26, 1947.

To this special union were born six children. Sharon Louise (July 1-July 26, 1948), Gerald Laroy, Connie Louise, Shirley Jean, Sandra Lynn and Colleen Joy.

The early years of their marriage were spent on the Droog family farm near Hull, ND but they later moved to raise their family in Strasburg, ND.

Grace loved being a stay at home mom while raising her family and assisting her husband with coordinating his bulk gas truck route.

In 1968, with a desire for a Christ centered education for their children, John and Grace stepped out in faith and moved their family to Sioux Center, Iowa. To contribute financially Grace sought employment.  Throughout her working years, she always looked for jobs where she could serve, using her love for people and her caring nature.

Those years of employment included serving at: K-Products, The Compaan Dry Cleaners, Dordt University, cleaning dorm rooms and later working at the Dordt University Bookstore for 26 years; working alongside her husband at the Droog Service Station and later as the custodians at Faith CRC in Sioux Center.

After her years of formal employment ended, Grace spent time as a Senior Companion and later a Foster Grandma in the local elementary schools.

Grace was a devoted Christian, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She will be remembered for her love for the Lord, her family, and a genuine love for people. She had a positive attitude, love for baking, countless family gatherings with delicious meals, sewing, crafting, crocheting and reading. She continued many of these activities into her final days while living at Crown Pointe.

Thankful to have shared in her life are her family: Gerald and Kathy (Nieuwsma) Droog of Sioux Center, Connie and Doug De Nooy of Parker, CO; Shirley and Gord Dekkenga of Sioux Falls, SD; Sandi and Kim Shoesmith of San Diego, CA; Colleen and Allen Horstman of Sioux Center, IA; 20 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; a sister, Kay Stoll, a brother, Don Nicolay; many special nieces, nephews and friends.

Grace was greeted in Heaven by MANY dear family and friends. Her desire to greet each of you there was evident even in her final hours. She is HOME FREE!
