Marv Rietema

December 11, 1948 — February 6, 2023

     Marv Rietema, age 74, of Sioux Center, Iowa, died on Monday, February 6, 2023, at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Grapevine at Grapevine, TX.

      Visitation will be Monday, February 13, 2023, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with the family present at Faith Christian Reformed Church at Sioux Center.

      A prayer service for family and friends will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at Faith Christian Reformed Church at Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery at Sioux Center.

      Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at Faith Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Bob Pollema and Rev. Cliff Hoekstra officiating.

Memorial donations can be made in Marv's name to Youthfront, a ministry in Kansas City, KS

where his son, Kurt, serves.

     Marvin Jon Rietema was born on December 11, 1948, in Kanawha, IA, the son of John and Minnie (Christians) Rietema. Marv graduated from Kanawha High School in 1967 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Dordt College in 1971. Marv was united in marriage to Helene (Hengeveld) Rietema on June 30, 1970, in Orange City, IA. Marv and Helene started their careers as teachers in Oskaloosa, IA. After a few years there, they moved back to Sioux Center where Marv began working at Tri-State Livestock Auction. Not long afterwards Marv started, Northwest Order Buyers, his own business in pork production, together with his brother-in-law, Ted Hengeveld. Marv & Helene made their home in Sioux Center, Iowa where they raised their three sons. Marv served on the Iowa Pork Board, the board of the Sioux County Fair, and Western Christian High School and in past years, was an elder and deacon at Faith Christian Reformed Church. He enjoyed raising pigs for the fair, antiquing, growing giant pumpkins, eating out at restaurants, vacationing in Mexico, being with friends, spending time at the lakes, road trips and visiting his grandkids.

     Marv is survived by his wife of 52 years, Helene Rietema of Sioux Center; his children Jeff Rietema, Kurt and Emily Rietema of Kansas City, KS and Justin and Amy Rietema of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; and grandchildren, Luke, Perkins, Leo, Charlotte and Finn. 

He is also survived by his siblings Wayne and Bev Rietema and Jan and Larry Cooper; and Helene's siblings Ted and Rachel Hengeveld and Ron and Garneth Lighthiser; along with many nieces and nephews. 

Marv is preceded in death by his parents, John and Minnie Rietema and Helene's parents, Ted and Nellie Hengeveld.
